Andrea Varangu, Artist

The Website & Brand

This website was designed to be image focused. Andrea’s paintings speak for themselves and their vibrancy make the website shine. The main areas of focus for this website are to showcase Andrea’s work, bring highlight to her upcoming and past exhibitions and art tours, and to allow for people to contact her for commission work or to purchase a painting.

The brand revolves around Andrea and her work. The logo is based off of the signature Andrea uses to sign her work and the colour palette is selected straight from her paintings. Each element is designed to reflect as much of Andrea’s personality as possible. The print material, much like the website is also focused on Andrea’s work and sticks to the same colour palette.

The Gallery

The goals of the photo gallery was to:

  • Allow for modular stacking so there wouldn’t be awkward spaces throughout the page

  • Allow for a lightbox overlay when an image is clicked for a larger shot

  • Use the red dot system from galleries to reflect sold paintings

  • Have a simple design so as not to take away from the work

  • Has to be user-friendly so Andrea can update the work on her own

We went with just a slight outline around the image and sale icon to give visual distinctions between each element. The images are self-stacking and will move around to adjust to a screen width change. This module is very easy to use where, in the backend, where Andrea can drag her images in, copy and paste the red dot if needed, and save the changes. There is also an option to optimize the images.

Concept

Andrea Varangu (formerly Pyman) is a pastel artist living in beautiful Prince Edward County in Ontario, Canada. Her work is inspired by the rural landscapes and sparkling waterscapes that surround her country home and studio. Wanting to brand herself under her artist name rather than her gallery, Andrea needed a brand that reflected herself and her personal art style.

Objective

  • Develop a brand identity based on Andrea’s personal style

  • Create a web and print colour scheme that reflects Andrea’s paintings

  • Develop a visual oriented website to promote Andrea’s work, exhibitions, and art tour

  • Do a photoshoot to get imagery for the website such as elements from her studio and a headshot

  • Create print material (brochures and business cards) for Andrea’s upcoming art tour

  • Create and post social media posts to announce the new brand

Considerations

The primary demographic for Andrea’s website are other artists and art buyers. These people are generally women and 40+ years old.

With this in mind, some design focuses were:

  • Keeping the website visual and engaging with lots of imagery

  • Having all information accessible from each page

  • Ensuring the information is to the point and that the web elements do not overshadow the artwork

  • Ensuring all elements are designed to be responsive from mobile phones to large desktops
